​Storyboard	An e-learning storyboard is the blueprint for an e-learning module. Instructional design principles guide the process in which the course will be organized. A storyboard includes what visuals, audio, images, interactions, and branching the instructional designer will include.
​Script	A script is a text that is usually written with the storyboard where it describes and explains the content that will be taught. The purpose of the e-learning script is to engage the learner, therefore the script must use conversational language instead of academic language.
Template	A typical storyboard template will include slide identifiers, what the learner sees and hears, user interaction, and any additional notes. A storyboard template helps the instructional designer plan the overall course structure and break down the content.

E-learning is a rapidly growing industry since it is growing as technology is advancing. Therefore, there are many e-learning examples and tools available for instructional designers to use in order to best address the needs of their learners.

Some Examples

Written eLearning Template

The written eLearning template includes essential elements such as slide number and title, learning objectives, text and audio content, and description of functionality. The written eLearning template helps the instructional designer structure the storyboard. A strength in the written eLearning template is that they are easier to edit. Since the course isn’t fully developed yet, it is easier to edit it on paper by rewriting some text than spending hours editing a branching scenario. A weakness in the written eLearning storyboard is that the instructional designer might struggle to convey to the production team and graphic designers the type of aesthetic they want for the training. This particular eLearning template would be helpful for any project that involves storytelling, through storyboarding the instructional designer is able to see if the potential story is relevant to the industry they are designing the course.

Visual eLearning Template

The visual eLearning template helps the instructional designer organize both the course content and course design. It includes the same essential elements as a written eLearning template with the addition of the description of graphics. When using this template, the instructional designer works on both the content and visuals simultaneously, therefore it takes a longer time to complete. A strength of the visual eLearning template is that it helps the instructional designer bring their collective vision of a project to life and since it integrates the instructional designer’s desired course design, it helps them articulate to the graphic designers and production team their desired vision of the project. A weakness of the visual eLearning template would be that it is difficult for some SMEs and stakeholders to understand if they are not familiar with the learning process. This particular eLearning template would be helpful for creating rapid eLearning development using Powerpoint or Adobe Captivate, since these storyboards are often created with the authoring tools that will be used for the training.

Script Learning Template

The eLearning script template helps the instructional designer create a successful training by helping them put their thoughts into words. The instructional designer has to take into consideration how the information will be said and what words will be spoken. A strength in the eLearning script template is that it doesn’t force the instructional designer to spend time starting from scratch. The instructional designer is able to simply plug in the information they want to say into the script while including an attention grabber, being able to describe the problem, and explain the solution. A weakness in the eLearning script template is that instructional designers may lose the desire to innovate. With the eLearning script template it becomes easy to develop a script within minutes, therefore instructional designers may easily fall for the convenience of the script and not give themselves the opportunity to create unique content. This particular eLearning script would be helpful for making an instructional video to demonstrate a skill, since it follows a sequential outline.
